I’d use the money to try and get some more young people interested in science, particularly young people who have a difficult time at home and who might not have had the chance to enjoy science as much as the rest of us. So I’d be helping to inspire some new young scientists and hopefully one day, they might do similar research to me, or something else that inspires them!

As Clare I would use the money to tell people about science, specially children. And I really would like to show Portuguese kids (I am from Portugal) how science can be so interesting. I think in the UK science communication is getting bigger, that’s why we have such nice events like this one. But in Portugal is still starting, so I’d like to help with that 🙂

No. It wouldn’t. Cancer research is phenomenally expensive to do, and the prize for this wouldn’t make much of a dent.
BUT it would help us do something else just as important, which is get outside and shout about science and try and get more young people interested. I, for one, have a big old microscope body lying around, and I long to get it out and show people everywhere what cool tiny creatures live in the soil, ponds, or in the black gunge next to the kitchen tap.

      Hi ninjallames,

No. That would be against the rules- we are not supposed to spend it on our research, but on science communication, actually 😉

Like Mariana said, science communication in the UK is a big thing compared to what happens in other countries. In germany, nothing really happens… so I could do my little part to change that! In germany, no such cool events like IAS exist- you are lucky to have the opportunity to take part. Do you enjoy yourself here at the IAS event?
