I’m using microbiology right now to try and develop a treatment for cancer and we are using Salmonella bacteria. We hope to be able to use the bacteria to target tumour cells to deliver a therapy that will leave healthy cells intact and er, healthy! In order to do this we need to have a good understanding of what the bacteria normally do inside the human body, but we will also need to understand exactly how bacteria interact with tumour cells. In doing so, we may also learn something new about cancer itself. There are lots of questions we need to find answers for so it won’t be easy!
